Operations

To join OVERT, prospective applicants are required to successfully pass all stages of the application process:

  1. Ensure qualifications – Prospective candidates must ensure they meet the minimum requirements for joining OVERT.
  2. Attend an orientation session – Attending an orientation is mandatory, and each orientation session attendance will be taken at the end. Orientation dates are posted on this page.
  3. Submit an application – Applicants must submit their full application by the posted deadline on this page. Details of what must be submitted are listed below.
  4. Attend an interview – Applicants who are selected for interviews must attend on the date and time provided to them. Applicants will be interviewed by a panel of seasoned OVERT members.
  5. Receive a conditional offer – Applicants who successfully pass the interview stage will be given a conditional offer to join OVERT. They will join the New Recruit class and will be trained both in classrooms and in the field.
  6. Gain probation status – New Recruit class members who successfully pass their training are put on probationary status for 1 year and become general members of the team.

 

Minimum Requirements

Those wishing to join OVERT must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • 20 Years of age or older
  • Grade 12 or equivalent education
  • Drivers license (G2 or higher)
  • Physically fit
  • Standard Level First Aid and CPR Level C
  • No criminal record
  • Permitted to work in Canada

 

Orientation Sessions

Orientation sessions take place at the beginning of each recruiting cycle. During the session deadlines, and interview and training dates, will be announced. All applicants must be able to attend all dates for the entirety of the interview/training period, no exceptions will be made under any circumstances.

Submitting Applications

After having attended an orientation session, applicants must submit their applications before the posted deadline. Applications must be submitted by email to recruiting@overt.ca as one, single PDF document. Zip files or other formatted files will not be accepted. Applications must contain all of the following documents:

  1. OVERT questionnaire (Download Here)
  2. Cover letter and resumé
  3. Copy of grade twelve high school diploma or equivalent (we will accept Canadian college or university transcripts)
  4. Copy of a valid driver’s license (front and back)
  5. Copy of a valid CPR-C/First aid certificate
  6. Copy of a valid IMS 100 or ICS 100 certificate

 

Interview Stage

Selected candidates will be given an interview slot. Interviews are held in front of a panel of seasoned OVERT members to assess the strength of their candidacy. Candidates must bring their passport or permanent resident card or Canadian birth certificate, and their driver’s license to the interview to be checked for validity.

 

Conditional Offer

Candidates selected after the interview stage are given a conditional offer to join the new recruit class. New recruits will undergo training in classrooms and in the field. In-class training is approximately 36 hrs long, and held over two weekends. The new recruit field day is a 12hr long day of training in daylight and nighttime.

During in-class training, candidates will purchase their uniform from OVERT for use during the field day. Uniform costs, combined with costs for boots and other essential equipment, range from $300-$500.

 

Probation Status

New recruits who successfully pass the training will be granted probationary member status on the team. Probation lasts for 1 year. During the probation period, members cannot join specialty units.

All members must complete certain training hours and event hours each year to stay members of OVERT. This includes a minimum of 18 training hours and 12 event hours per year.

Board of Directors

Board of Director positions are year appointment positions, elected by team membership at each AGM. Members of the Board of Directors jointly oversee the activities and business operations of the organization. Individuals interested in applying for a position on the Board of Directors are encouraged to contact Human Resources.
